This week it started. La rentrée. August has officially become my favorite month in Paris, despite the closures of some of my favorite lunch spots. But now the calm of the city has already started to be replaced by people everywhere, the buzz of traffic, and actually having to look and wait before I cross the street in my neighborhood. The best US equivalent to "la rentrée" is "Back to School." However, in Paris, as [almost] everyone takes off the month of August, kids and adults alike talk about the looming and dreaded rentrée back into reality. While not quite as charming as the Paris closure signs (see here and here), la rentrée is definitely in the air...

ReplyDeleteOhh that's still great that Parisians take a month off in August. Americans have something to learn from that. But I suppose it's almost time for a return to everyday life at work/school.
ReplyDeleteThe Parisians don't just take August off in France. My (British) husband works for a French company here in Dubai, and the office is empty throughout the month. They are all off, despite work commitments and different habits down here in the UAE.
ReplyDeleteBut La Rentree has now started here as well and people are trickling back in time for the start of school - and the end of Ramadan!
Personally I hate being in Paris in August as my favourite cafe plus my favourite little friperie shop are both closed all month...
